The calculations converting the nominal dollar values of National Health Expenditure data to 2012 Adjusted dollars were performed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index (CPI) to adjust for inflation (http://www.bls.gov/cpi/cpifaq.htm#Question_1). The Health System Measurement Project uses the CPI for all nominal value conversions. The CPI adjusts values for economy-wide inflation rather than health care-specific inflation. Note that inflation-adjusted estimates of National Health Expenditures produced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Office of the Actuary adjust for inflation using other indices, including indices that are specific to the type of expenditure. For more information on methods used by the Office of the Actuary, please see: http://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems/Statistics-Trend....
