Percentage of Hospitals That Have Adopted Electronic Health Records at the Basic Level

Electronic health record systems include specific functionalities in the following areas of health care and administrative data management: patient demographics, patient problem lists, electronic lists of medication taken by patients, clinical notes, orders for prescriptions, laboratory results viewing, and imaging results viewing.

Metrics Calculation:

Percent of acute care non-federal hospitals reporting an electronic health record system calculated from respondents to the annual American Hospital Association Survey on IT adoption.

Results are weighted to account for response bias.

Additional Information:

Inclusion Criteria: All non-federal general acute care hospitals in the American Hospital Association annual survey, including critical access hospitals.

Exclusion Criteria: Federal hospitals, and hospitals located outside of the 50 States and the District of Columbia.

Definitions: A "basic" electronic health record system includes specific functionalities in the following areas of health care and administrative data management: patient demographics, patient problem lists, electronic lists of medication taken by patients, clinical notes, orders for prescriptions, laboratory results viewing, and imaging results viewing.
